It always important to own a qualified brewery equipment. It relates many brewery details, a different design will produce a lot influence on brewing effect. Each brew master pay much more attention on brewery design. For example, if we should have an agitator for brewhouse tanks?
As we know, with agitator design, we can get uniform heating in brewing tank, so we can brew qualified beer. But in some situations, it may produce other negative influence, so we have to find solutions to avoid. We mainly need to consider brewhouse combination and heating method. Here let me list some samples, hope it can give you some reference on brewhouse design.
1) MLT + KWT + HLT
As the kettle inside is wort, which is not sticky like mash. Either for steam heating, electric heating or direct fire heating, all are OK without agitator. It is OK to get efficient brewing.
About direct fire heating, as it heat the brewhouse tank bottom directly, some brew maters still work about there have a risk to scorch wort. So they prefer to add an agitator for mixing.
As the kettle combined with whirlpool in one vessel, with agitator inside, it will have influence to the whirlpool. So we would better design the agitator can be lifted.
In our experience, it is suitable for brewhouse capacity below 1000L. With bigger brewhouse, it will be difficult to lift.
2) MT + LT + KWT + HLT
For brewhouse KWT, the situation still is same with 1). But for MT, it always better to have an agitator design. As mash is very sticky, with any heating method, the agitator will help a lot to get uniform heating. It always is a good thing for brewing.
3) MKWT + LT + HLT
The brewhouse combination is more complicated, mash, kettle, whirlpool combined in one vessel, we have to consider meeting brewing demands well. It will be have some certain limitations on brewhouse capacity and heating method.
For steam heating, it suits for various capacity brewhouse, but in order to get uniform heating for mash, we need to add agitator into design. To avoid influencing whirlpool function, the agitator has to be lifted. But it is not suit for bigger capacity brewhouse. So normally for such brewhouse combination, brewhouse capacity below 1000L is normal.
For direct fire heating, it always necessary to have an agitator for your brewery. But the brewhouse capacity normally below 1000L as well due to application limitations.
So the brewery design can be influenced by brewhouse combinations, heating method, as well brewery capacity. If you need a better design for your brewery, I am at your disposal.
