Wort grant, Hydrator and Wort collecting ring for brewhouse
1. What is wort grant?
It is used for reducing the vacuum pressure risk during lauter process, so it can protect the false bottom from out of shape.
The reason is, during lauter process, the wort flows out from the lauter tun into the wort grant by gravity only（not by direct pumping). This process is gentle and easy to control.
For example, for this stainless steel wort grant, here is a mechanical float ball to control the pump. When the wort reaches higher level inside the wort grant, the pump is on to transfer the wort from wort grant tank to the kettle. When the wort drops to lower level inside the wort grant, the pump is off.
Another wort grant is the glass model. It is sealed. It is also used for reducing the vacuum pressure risk during lauter process. It is more sanitary and needs a little skill to operate: We make the inlet valve half open, and also adjust the pump speed accordingly, so the wort flows are same at the inlet and outlet. So the wort flow is continuous during the whole lauter process. This is also good for pump as the pump do not need to open of close frequently.
Level balance tube: It is like a indicator and also protect the false bottom during lauter. The brewers knows if the lauter is smooth or not through checking the wort level inside the tube. When the tube is full, it means the lauter is smooth and the pressure is balanced. When the tube is not full, it means a vacuum problem.
2. What is hydrator:
It is more popular used in bigger brewhouse to feed the grain. As we can see, it connects a water pipe and has a spray nozzle inside. When the grain is fed through the hydrator, the water is sprayed and mixed with the grain. So it has three functions:
1) I avoids the dust, since the hydrartor is connected with a big hopper above, or directly connect with an auger. It is a sealed connection.
2)Because the hot water starts to mix with grain during the feeding process, so it is like a pre-mash.
3)Because the grain is sprayed with water during the feeding process, It prevents the caking of the mash.
3. What are wort collecting ring and anti-rinsing ring?
During lauter process, the wort flows out of the lauter tun from multi-Channels,
so the wort flows evenly and pressure inside the grain bed is more uniform. It is good for lauter.
When lauter is stuck and can not be solved by other ways, a final solution is to press water or gas from the anti-rinsing ring to loosen the grain bed.
