To protect heat exchanger away from impurities, it’s normal to design two parallel pipe filter before heat exchanger, so we can use it alternatively. It helps improving beer quality as well.
1. Why Filters Are Needed Before the PHE
Even after wort boiling and whirlpool separation, the wort may still contain:
- Hop particles and residues
- Protein coagulates (trub)
- Small grain husk fragments or solids
These suspended solids can:
- Block the narrow channels inside the plate heat exchanger
- Reduce heat transfer efficiency
- Increase cleaning frequency and time
- Damage plates or gaskets over time
Adding filters before the PHE serves as preventive protection.
2. Typical Two Different Precision Filter
The two filters installed by parallel, it can be with two different precision. If one filter was blocked, we can use another one. So it will not delay wort cooling process. The filter was finished by laser cutting, which is smooth and easy to operate.

3. Main Advantages
1) Protect the Plate Heat Exchanger
- Prevents clogging by hop resins and hot break.
- Extends the service life of plates and gaskets.
2) Maintain Cooling Efficiency
- Keeps flow channels clear and heat transfer effective.
- Avoids excessive pressure drop across the PHE.
3)Ensure Uniform Wort Cooling
-Provides stable flow without localized blockages.
- Results in more consistent fermentation temperatures.
4) Improve Final Beer Quality
- Reduces suspended solids entering the fermenter.
- Leads to clearer, more stable beer.
5) Implify Cleaning and Maintenance
- Less residue buildup inside the PHE.
- Filters can be cleaned independently without dismantling the exchanger.
4. Installation Tips
- Install accoridng to the labels we marked on the pipe
- Ensure the filters have sufficient flow area to minimize pressure loss.
- Clean or CIP filters regularly to prevent blockages.
