A grist hopper is a vessel being installed above mash tun, it is used to hold and dispense the milled malt into the mash tun. It can have some advantages, but it's not a strict necessity for all brewing setups. Whether to use a grist hopper for your brewery equipment depends on your specific brewing process, the size of your brewery, and your ceiling height etc. Here are some factors to consider when deciding whether to use a grist hopper:

Consistent Grain Addition: A grist hopper can help ensure a consistent and controlled addition of milled grain to the mash tun. This can help prevent clumps or uneven distribution of grains in the mash, leading to better mash efficiency and more consistent beer quality.

Larger Batches: If you're brewing larger batches of beer, a grist hopper can make handling and adding large quantities of grain more manageable and efficient.

Installation space:  The total height would be bigger after installed the grist hopper above your brewhouse equipment. If the ceiling height is not enough on site, it is available to connect flexible auger directly with mash tun.

Manual vs. Mechanical: If you're operating a smaller, manual brewing setup, you might not require a grist hopper. You can manually add the milled grain to the mash tun without the need for additional equipment.

Cost and Maintenance: Like any piece of the brewery equipment, a grist hopper adds to the cost of your brewery setup and requires maintenance. You should assess whether the benefits it provides align with your brewing goals and resources.

In summary, a grist hopper can be a valuable tool in certain brewing scenarios, especially for larger batches or automated brewing systems. It can contribute to more consistent mashing and better overall process efficiency. However, if you are using a small beer brewery equipment or a manual setup, you might be able to achieve satisfactory results without a grist hopper. Evaluate your specific needs, brewing goals, and equipment setup to determine whether a grist hopper is a worthwhile addition to your brewery equipment.
