Wort grant operation during vorlauf process
As we all know that the wort grant is added after the Lauter tun, so the wort is filtered into the wort grant tank by gravity rather than by a direct pumping. It helps to reduce the possible vacuum pressure risk under the grain bed. Here are our operation experience on vales, wort grant tank and pump during vorlauf process:
1.) During vorlauf, the wort comes from the LT, through the wort grant and pump and then come back to the top of the LT.
2.) We open the valve (LT outlet valve) as 1/3 open (not full open), and the pump speed is set at around 20HZ (according to the filter speed of the wort). But it is not one-time setting to let the pump at 20HZ, the pump speed is gradually increased from 10HZ to final for example 20HZ.
3.) There is float ball control in the wort grant, so the pump screw-button on the control panel can be on 'auto' option or 'manual' option. If it is on 'auto' option, when the wort level reached a higher level, the pump is open automatically to transfer the wort from the wort grant back to the LT. When the wort level reached a lower level, the pump is closed automatically.
If it is on' manual' option, the brewers needs to control the 'on/off' of the pump according to a careful watching.
4.) One important signal/reference to adjust the pump speed is to watching the wort inside the sight glass on the pipe,
This vorlauf process normally takes around 10 minutes before the wort becoming clear.
