Can I sterilize my fermentation tank with steam?

Many breweries today prefer to clean and sterilize their beer fermentation tanks with hot water or sterilize the tanks with hot steam, as a beer brewery equipment manufacturer, actually we do not quite suggest to do so. Here are several reasons for your reference as below:

I. It may cause negative pressure when done inappropriately
Under ordinary pressure, the weight of 1M3 steam is 560g, but the weight of 1M3 water is 1ton. If the steam is condensed, its volume will reduce to 1/1786 of origin. Which may cause negative pressure and make the tanks dangerous.

II. The hot steam may cause gasket seal aging
Raising the temperature can cause thermal cracking or thermal crosslinking of the rubber. Means the lifetime of your rubber gasket may be shortened, an aged rubber seal would cause beer leakage.

III. Not good for welding line
Alternation of cold and heat may affect the stress of the weld, causing deformation or even cracking of the weld, then may cause glycol liquid leakage.

If you must need steam sterilization on your beer fermenters, we suggest to control the pressure at about 0.5bar, and running for 15~20minutes.
