Grist case is milled malt storage tank after milling before mashing. With grist case, the miller could work slowly and steadily. When it is time to start mashing, the grist case would drop all of the malt into mash tun all at once, then the miller could start work for next batch of beer. It is just one of the part in the whole malt handling system, that also included Miller, Flexible auger and Grist hydrator. So does grist case is must needed in the beer brewery equipment?
As a professional beer brewery equipment manufacturer with more than 15 years experience, we can tell you that grist cases are necessary for about 70% of breweries and can be hung above the mash tun for quicker dump times. But there are special cases as well.
I. When you have limited ceiling height or limited budget
The grist case is installed above mash tun, there is no doubt a higher ceiling height would be needed. For a 10HL brewery equipment, the total installation height would be at least 4M and for a 20hl brewery equipment, the total height at about 6M. So if your ceiling height is not allowed you to have grist case on site, it is ok to remove it and connect the flexible auger with grist hydrator directly like below photo. Now you need less investment on your brewery project.
II. When you are running a small brewery equipment
For the brewery equipment with capacity exceed 1000L, now there are may be at least 200kg malt being used every batch, considering of labour saving, now we suggest to have grist case. But if you are running a small capacity saying less than 800L, it is available to do malt feeding by hand if you prefer.
So for different brewery project situations, the answer is not uniform. If you wanna know more details on how to choose beer brewery equipment, please feel free to contact with Tiantai Beer Equipment.
