Heat mash in electric heating method?

In smaller system, most of customer prefer use electric heating method for brewing, because electric heating method is relatively economical, no need to purchase boiler or burner, and electricity consumption is also acceptable. While, the obvious cons of electric heating is it couldn’t be used in MLT to heat mash, because heating tube will scorch mash, so, the suitable for heat mash is mixing hot water from kettle tun or hot liquor tank. However, what we should do if customer insist on heating mash with electric heating?

Following is part of viewpoint from customer

1.Equip an agitator to kettle tun and use kettle tun as mash tun for now
Mash is heated in KWT by heating tube and agitator is used for help agitating to avoid scorch. After mashing, move the mash to MLT for lauter process. In this case, as high temp heating tube touch the mash directly, scorch of part of mash is inevitable, even we already equip agitator. Of course, if we maker agitator power bigger to ensure a more sufficient mixing process, that will lower the possibility of scorch.

2.Choose HERMS for heating mash
However, HERMS is common in heating of wort, seldom used for heating real mash. As we know, the mixed liquid of crushed malt and water is very thick, and the diameter of HERMS tube is thin. If we pump thick mash into thin tube of HERMS, there is a high risk on block off. And once mash is blocked off inside tube, it is not easy to drained it out and clean tube.

It looks both this two method is not ideal enough, so, if heating mash directly is really important, steam heating or direct fire heating are considerable.
