The best heating way for 3-vessel brewhouse
Client question:
Could I get 3 quote for all electric, direct fire and steam heating? Three vessel brewhuse of mash/lauter tun, kettle, whirlpool vessel? What is the most efficient form of heating for a brewhouse of this size? Also, is it possible to get a mash tun that can get heated (to control temperature and perform decoction mashes)?
Tiantai answer:
For the three kinds of heating methods, the most recommended one is the steam heating as it do not touch the wort directly and thus produce better quality wort. Here let’s see the main differences of the brewhouse with the three heating methods:
Electric heating:
The mash/lauter tun can not be heated as the electric elements can not be mounted together with the false bottom.
So only the kettle can be heated.
Although the mash tun can be mounted with electric heating elements if the brewhouse can be mash tun, lauter tun, kettle/whirlpool tun (the other kind of three-vessel brewhouse), but the mash liquid has a risk to be scorched as it touch the heating elements directly, and besides, the heating elements will effect the whirlpool functions if we combined the whirlpool function with the kettle.
Direct fire heating:
The same, the mash/lauter tun can not be heated with a direct fire, as the burner heat the tank mainly from the bottom, however, only the wort part (under the false bottom) can be heated, the rest part above the false bottom can not be heated.
Only the kettle can be heated.
If we change the brewhouse into: mash tun, lauter tun, kettle/whirlpool tun, then the mash tun can be heated with the burner too. But here is also a scorch risk at the bottom so the brewmaster should monitor and operate with much care.
Steam heating:
Both the mash/lauter tun, and kettle can be jacketed for either infusion or decoction mashing.
This is the most ideal heating method if the budget for the steam boiler is enough.
So finally, we suggest this:
For mash/lauter tun, kettle vessel, whirlpool vessel, we most recommend the steam heating, besides, the hot liquor tank can be heated with the same steam boiler too.
If steam heating is not possible, then we suggest the direct fire heating, but then we recommend the brewhouse of mash tun, lauter tun, kettle/whirlpool tun. If we heat the mash tun, and kettle tun together, then 2x burners will be needed. If there is a hot liquor tank, to save the cost on the 3rd burner, the hot liquor tank can chose electric heating.
