The wort grant or sometime being called lauter grant, is one of the most useful device in a beer brewery equipment. It usually being installed between lauter tun and brew kettle, working as a buffer tank between grain and wort. The wort grant could supply valuable information about the wort runoff quality during beer brewing.

The wort grant is rarely found in large commercial brewery equipment, but it was, at one time, a vital component of most German beer breweries. It is, in function if not always form, nothing more than an intermediate vessel in which liquid is collected on its way from the lauter tun to the boil kettle. The wort grant permits access to runoff as the mash is lautered and sparged. There are a few pros with it in your brewery equipment:

(1) . In a brewery equipment that rely on pumps, the wort grant provides a buffer between the outflow from the lauter tun and the inflow to the boil kettle or back into lauter tun. This mitigates the potential for a vacuum, which might compact the grain bed and cause a stuck mash.

(2) . The brewer can observe wort entering the grant and pump it back to the top of the mash until it has become sufficiently clear to be redirected to the boil kettle.

In a typical modern wort grant, wort enters a small cylindrical container through the bottom and is pumped away from somewhere nearer the top, like below photo:

But in some commercial brewery equipment, the wort grant usually being replaced by “balance column”,  it connect the bottom space and top space of the lauter tun. Means it plays big role for avoiding vacuum. And the photo as below:

Regardless of your brewery type, the wort grant is an important piece of the brewery equipment, allowing brewers to brew clearer, better beer.
