Heating wort by external Calandria
Some of customers prefer using external calandria to heat the wort in boiling process. External calandria usually means tubular/plate heat exchanger made of stainless steel.

Working principle:
External calandria usually is installed out of kettle tun. When working, the wort will pass through heat exchanger from bottom to top with 2.5m/s speed or recycle in tubes. In order to speed up wort recycling, to place a wort pump between kettle tun and external heater is necessary. In working capacity, wort pump could support 8-10 times’ circulation of wort per hour. After heating, wort will goes into kettle tun by whirlpool tun or middle inlet. The heating temp is usually 107℃~110℃.

External Calandria

Advantage:
1.Shorter boiling time. Because the heating in the external calandria is under pressure, so, the boiling time could be shorten around 20-30%, which could save energy.
2.Circulation times could be adjusted.
3.Necessary steam pressure is lower, just 0.3MPa.
4.Boiling strength and temp could be adjusted conveniently.
...

Disadvantage:
1.Higher electricity consumption as another pump need to drive circulation.
2.Higher cost for external calandria
3.Higher flow speed of wort in the heater is easy to form shear force, which might lower the beer quality.
